Connect your Instagram to your ads

Right now your ads would show under your Facebook page name instead of your Instagram handle. That throws away every follower, post and bit of proof you've built. This fixes it, once, and you keep full ownership.

The trap

Your Facebook page saying Instagram connected is not this. That link is for posting. Ads ignore it completely.

What ads actually use

The Instagram added as an asset in Business Settings and ticked against both your page and your ad account.

You'll need

Your Instagram login, and the Facebook login that owns your ads. A laptop, because the phone app hides half of this.

Your progress

The five steps

Step 4 is the one everything hinges on.

A personal account can't be attached to ads at all, so this has to be right before anything else works. Nothing about your posts, followers or feed changes when you switch.

  1. In the Instagram app, tap your profile picture, then the menu, then Settings and privacy.
  2. Scroll to Account type and tools. It should say Business or Creator.
  3. If it says Personal, tap Switch to professional account and pick Business. Skip any step that asks you to connect a Facebook page here, we do that properly in step 3.
  1. On a laptop, go to business.facebook.com/settings and sign in with the Facebook account that owns your ads.
  2. Top left there's a business name. Make sure it's your business, the one holding your ad account. If it says something else, click it and switch. If you've only got one, it'll already be right.
  1. In the left menu open Accounts, then Instagram accounts.
  2. If your handle is already listed, click it and go straight to step 4.
  3. If not, click the blue Add button. A window pops up asking you to log in to Instagram. Use your business Instagram login. That window is Instagram's own. Your password never touches Facebook or us.
  4. If it asks for a code, it goes to your phone or your authenticator app.

Once it connects, Meta asks which things are allowed to use the account. Adding the Instagram without ticking the ad account looks finished on screen and still leaves the ads running under the page name.

Connect assets to @yourhandle
Pages · Your Facebook pagetick
Ad accounts · Your ad accounttick
  1. Under Pages, tick your Facebook page.
  2. Under Ad accounts, tick your ad account. If there are two, tick both.
  3. Click Done or Save changes.
  4. Already had the Instagram listed at step 3? Click it, then Add assets or Connected assets, and do the same two ticks there.

Send a message saying the Instagram is connected. We check it from our side in about a minute, rebuild the ads so they carry your handle, and then they're ready to go. Nothing spends until you say.

If you get stuck

It says the Instagram is already connected to another business

An old agency, or a Business Manager you set up years ago and forgot. Log in to Instagram on a laptop, go to Settings, then Business tools and controls, and disconnect it from the old one. Then come back to step 3.

If you can't get into the old one, tell us. We can usually work out who owns it.

The Add button asks for a Facebook login, not Instagram

You're on the Pages screen, not Instagram accounts. Look one line down in the left menu.

My Instagram is connected but the ads still show the page name

Step 4 got skipped, nearly every time. Open Instagram accounts, click your handle, and check both your page and your ad account are listed under connected assets. If they are and it still shows wrong, tell us and we'll re-check the ads themselves.

I've got no laptop

It can be done in the phone's browser with "request desktop site" switched on, but it's fiddly. If you're stuck, we'll do it with you on a five minute call.

Then your ads look like you

Same videos, same targeting, but running under your handle with your followers and your posts behind them. To the people you want, that's the difference between an advert and a recommendation.
